The effects of global warming are finally at our doorsteps. The distant climate change phenomena is flooding our streets, eating our shores, and drying up our agricultural lands. Suddenly it is not a scientific theory anymore.
Going green is in. And everybody is joining in the bandwagon. In our personal effort to follow suit, here are seven simple ways to contribute to living light on Earth.
1. Buy compact fluorescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs consume more energy. Considering the number of light bulbs around your house, this can have a significant effect on your power consumption.
2. Unplug unused appliances to get away from “vampire” energy use.
3. Sun dry your clothes as mush as possible and wash them in cold water. A bulk of the energy that is expended in machine washing comes from these two functions.
4. Choose drought tolerant plants to beautify your home. This keeps your water consumption down. You can also have a reservoir for rainwater and use that to water your plants.
5. Bike your way to your office at least twice a week (if distance is manageable). You can also walk to your favorite hangout instead of driving there. This will not only make earth healthy, this can also give you the exercise you need for the week!
6. Buy smart. Buy in bulk for your grocery items. This will cut down packaging wastes. For your appliances, check on consumption ratios and ask questions about energy saving features before buying. Also include considering durability and high quality products that will last longer. Make a difference for every purchase decision you make.
7. Buy efficient tap water filters instead of buying bottled water. Clean up your own water. Plastic containers produce large amounts of waste and takes significant amount of energy to make. So take an aluminum container for your water when you go out the house.
These easy to follow measures might not be enough to remedy our global warming woes, but it gives us the power to be responsible for our own portion of the problem. And this is crucial in humankind’s effort to heal the Earth.
