Apparently, we have far too many people worried about prophesy; things such as Nostradamus’s bizarre riddles which can fit nearly any period; past, present, or future, as it reads much like a Machiavellian based future tale, the types of things which history is constantly repeating. Others are fearful of the Mayan Calendar and say that Global Warming maybe the cause?

Global Warming is an interesting topic, of course as you probably know back in the 1970s they were scaring everyone that we were going into an Ice Age, and well, warming sure sounds a lot better to me than freezing to death. The rising of the oceans seems a bit incorrect, but it sure adds to all the confusion and fear! But the calculations are all wrong, and the whole thing is speculative to say the least.

Now then, it is quite possible that 2012 could be a significant year due to the possibility of Solar Maximum getting back into full-swing, perhaps, more human conflicts, more Hurricanes, extreme weather, droughts, etc., but the year itself doesn’t ring a bell when studying prophesy. Actually, the Mayans just ran out of stone, when they were writing their calendar is all. Had it been larger they could have gotten quite a few more centuries carved into that darn rock, well from the archeologists I talk too anyway.

Still, regardless of Global Warming, water will be a huge deal in the future, actually it is right now. We are reaching a horrible crisis with fresh water all over the world actually. There will be lots of infrastructure emergency investment world-wide in the future. There will be need for desalination plants, severe water rationing, as well as issues with agriculture, food supply and unfortunately potential water wars over which nations or people’s own the regions natural flows of water. Please consider all this.

Alternative Energies And Other Fairy Tales

The quest for alternative, non-fossil fuel, energy sources is driven by two misconceptions: (1) The mistaken belief in “peak oil” (that we are nearing the complete depletion and exhaustion of economically extractable oil reserves) and (2) That market mechanisms cannot be trusted to provide adequate and timely responses to energy needs (in other words that markets are prone to failure).

At the end of the 19th century, books and pamphlets were written about “peak coal”. People and governments panicked: what would satisfy the swelling demand for energy? Apocalyptic thinking was rampant. Then, of course, came oil. At first, no one knew what to do with the sticky, noxious, and occasionally flammable substance. Gradually, petroleum became our energetic mainstay and gave rise to entire industries (petrochemicals and automotive, to mention but two).

History will repeat itself: the next major source of energy is very unlikely to be hatched up in a laboratory. It will be found fortuitously and serendipitously. It will shock and surprise pundits and laymen alike. And it will amply cater to all our foreseeable needs. It is also likely to be greener than carbon-based fuels.

More generally, the market can take care of itself: energy does not have the characteristics of a public good and therefore is rarely subject to market breakdowns and unalleviated scarcity. Energy prices have proven themselves to be a sagacious regulator and a perspicacious invisible hand.

Until this holy grail (“the next major source of energy”) reveals itself, we are likely to increase the shares of nuclear and wind sources in our energy consumption pie. Our industries and cars will grow even more energy-efficient. But there is no escaping the fact that the main drivers of global warming and climate change are population growth and the emergence of an energy-guzzling middle class in developing and f
1000
ormerly poor countries. These are irreversible economic processes and only at their inception.

Global warming will, therefore, continue apace no matter which sources of energy we deploy. It is inevitable. Rather than trying to limit it in vain, we would do better to adapt ourselves: avoid the risks and cope with them while also reaping the rewards (and, yes, climate change has many positive and beneficial aspects to it).

Climate change is not about the demise of the human species as numerous self-interested (and well-paid) alarmists would have it. Climate change is about the global redistribution and reallocation of economic resources. No wonder the losers are sore and hysterical. It is time to consider the winners, too and hear their hitherto muted voices. Alternative energy is nice and all but it is rather besides the point and it misses both the big picture and the trends that will make a difference in this century and the next.

A Comment on Energy Security

The pursuit of “energy security” has brought us to the brink. It is directly responsible for numerous wars, big and small; for unprecedented environmental degradation; for global financial imbalances and meltdowns; for growing income disparities; and for ubiquitous unsustainable development.

It is energy insecurity that we should seek.

The uncertainty incumbent in phenomena such “peak oil”, or in the preponderance of hydrocarbon fuels in failed states fosters innovation. The more insecure we get, the more we invest in the recycling of energy-rich products; the more substitutes we find for energy-intensive foods; the more we conserve energy; the more we switch to alternatives energy; the more we encourage international collaboration; and the more we optimize energy outputs per unit of fuel input.

A world in which energy (of whatever source) will be abundant and predictably available would suffer from entropy, both physical and mental. The vast majority of human efforts revolve around the need to deploy our meager resources wisely. Energy also serves as a geopolitical “organizing principle” and disciplinary rod. Countries which waste energy (and the money it takes to buy it), pollute, and conflict with energy suppliers end up facing diverse crises, both domestic and foreign. Profligacy is punished precisely because energy in insecure. Energy scarcity and precariousness thus serves a global regulatory mechanism.

But the obsession with “energy security” is only one example of the almost religious belief in “scarcity”.

Light (particularly sunlight) can be used to create heat or generate electrical power. This is referred to as solar energy.

It is a clean form of energy production, which doesn’t pollute the environment as some other forms of energy production do.

There are two forms of solar energy. The first is solar thermal conversion, which uses sunlight to create heat and then electrical power. The second is photovoltaic conversion, which uses sheets of special materials to create electricity from the sun. “Photo-” means “light,” and “voltaic” means “producing electricity.”

Solar Thermal Conversion

Solar thermal conversion systems use reflectors or mirrors to concentrate sunlight to extremely intense levels of heat. (Solar means “of the sun,” thermal means “of heat” and conversion means “changing something from one form to another.”)

You can understand this better if you consider the example of using a magnifying glass to start a fire. You may have heard of this or even tried it before. You can hold a magnifying glass under the sun, and concentrate the light on a small pile of flammable materials. The magnifying glass will make the sun’s heat much stronger, and will light the materials on fire. It has been said that a magnifying glass one meter in diameter, held under the sun, will create a ray hot enough to melt stone.

If you want to experiment, hold a magnifying glass flat under the sun and put your hand under it. Very soon you will need to move your hand away – don’t burn yourself.

Solar thermal conversion systems use mirrors or reflectors to concentrate sunlight onto containers full of liquid. Sometimes water is used. Sometimes other liquids are used, which retain heat better than water.

The liquids are heated up to high temperatures, and this produces steam. The steam is used to turn a turbine. The turning motion of the turbine is used to create electricity.

How does a rotating motion create electricity? When you set up a coiled wire or similar device to rotate between two magnets, it generates an electric current. This is how electric generators work, as well as windmills, nuclear power plants, and other energy plants which use such things as coal, gas, or petroleum.

Windmills use the wind to create the turning motion. Nuclear power or fossil fuels are used to heat water up, thus creating steam to turn the turbines.

Solar heating is another form of solar thermal conversion. In solar heating, an absorber is used to take in sunlight and convert it to heat. The absorber could be something simple, like black paint, or it could be a special ceramic material. A heat absorber is considered to a be good one when it collects at least 95 percent of the sun’s radiation.

The absorbers are then used to heat a fluid, which is then circulated to warm up buildings or to create hot-water supplies.

Photovoltaic Conversion

As covered above, photo means “light.” It comes from the Greek word “phos,” which means “light.”

“Voltaic” means, “producing electric current.” The word comes from the name of Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist who was a pioneer in the field of electricity during the 1700’s. (His name is also where the word “volt” comes from.)

Photovoltaic means, “creating electrical energy when exposed to light.”

A “cell” is a device that produces electricity. An example of an electrical cell is a flashlight battery.

Photovoltaic cells produce electricity when they are exposed to light. They usually consist of panels. The panels contain two layers of different materials.

When light hits these two layers, one of the layers becomes positively charged, and the other becomes negatively charged.

This works similarly to a regular flashlight battery, which has a positive end and a negative end. When a wire connects the two ends, they produce an electric current.

When the two layers of material in a solar cell are exposed to light, they create an electric current.

The AMOUNT of electricity generated by a solar power cell depends on several factors. Mainly:

-How big is the solar power device, and how much surface is exposed to the sun?

-How strong is the sun? (This depends on time of day, weather, latitude, etc.)

-How long is the solar power device exposed?

-How much impediment is there to the light? (Clouds, mist, dust, dirt, etc.)

In other words, a solar power cell generates electricity faster when the sun (or light) is brighter. A device with larger solar panels will produce more electricity than one with smaller panels. Exposing the cell for a longer period of time will create more electricity than exposing it for a shorter period of time. A panel near the equator will be more effective than one in an arctic region. A solar panel in misty or dusty conditions does not create as much electricity as it would in full, unobstructed sun.

Some solar cells produce only enough current to power small electronic devices, but can be “daisy-chained” (connected together) in order to create more electricity for other items.

Solar cells which produce enough electricity to run larger equipment (such as laptops) may be larger, more expensive, or heavier than the others.

But there are many varieties available. Individuals and companies are consistently striving to create lighter and more efficient portable solar cells.

Solar Energy and the Future

An advantage to solar power is that it can reduce expenses. It can also be portable. When one is backpacking in the wilderness or traveling far from power grids, solar power can provide a means of powering electronic equipment.

Another advantage is, of course, the lack of pollution created by solar energy production. In fact, if all of our electrical energy were produced by such means, we might not be worrying about global warming and the other destructive effects of pollution on our environment.

These threats to our environment also pose a threat to mankind. Solar power could be developed to a point where it, along with other forms of renewable energy, would replace harmful means of electricity production.

It isn’t necessarily impossible to have a clean and safe Earth. We just have to work on it.

If we are to believe that global warming is a reality, then how will it affect us all in the years to come and what can we do about it?

Rising sea levels would cause severe flooding which would displace thousands of people and the country’s agricultural system would be badly affected. Coastal flooding would affect animals and plants and of course fresh water supplies.

Many islands would disappear. Coral reefs would be submerged subjecting the local population to stronger storm surges.

Cities would require extensive infrastructure developments to ensure the supply of utilities such as power, communication, transportation and most importantly fresh water. Attempts would have to be made to reduce the impact of further flooding.

So it would seem that the lifestyle we have become accustomed to will have to be adjusted if we are to reduce the impact of these catastrophic events.

CO2 emissions will have to be reduced. Building companies must ensure all homes are more efficient in their use of electricity and gas, and their insulation is of the highest standard to avoid gas emissions entering the atmosphere.

Businesses will probably be asked to pay an addition tax on their energy use. Electricity companies may have to guarantee to supply 10% of their electricity from renewable sources.

Low carbon building programs will be introduced to provide grants towards installing microgeneration technologies.

If the planet is undergoing this dramatic change in it’s atmosphere it’s obviously going to affect what and how we eat, how we cope with increased weather changes and how we travel around the world.

It’s sensible to assume there is justification for much of the information we have been given with regard to the reasons behind the change in our weather patterns. Therefore it seems reasonable to also assume that we should change things in our lives to try to prevent global warming reaching disastrous proportions.

By buying ecologically friendly equipment, by stopping the destruction of our rainforests and helping the people in those areas to sustain themselves in ways other than selling their habitat, we’re going to cut back the dangerous emissions and hopefully control the so-called greenhouse effect.

There is still a great deal of controversy over the subject of global warming, with both sides seeming to present a reasonable case. In the end we are relying upon the scientists who claim the planet is in crisis, and those who claim it is all so much nonsense. Does anyone really know?

Whoever we choose to believe, it makes sense to try and cut back on some of the poisonous gases we’re emitting into the atmosphere if only for the sake of our health and that of our children. Whether global warming is a reality or not, we are responsible for our planet and by trying to keep it as clean and disease free as possible we must surely also be helping to prevent global disasters.

It’s therefore up to us to ensure the leading politicians of the world face up to this fact and attempt to make it a cleaner, healthier environment for us all.

Global Overpopulation: Effects And Solutions

Each week, we add about a million and half people to our current world population, which is at 6.8 billion. We have we reached the point many describe as global overpopulation. The family of humans, known as the hominids, has populated Earth, according to the fossil record, for 5 to 6 million years. The hominids transitioned from one genus to another before our genus, homo, appeared about a million and half to two million years ago. We transitioned through a number of homo species before our species, homo sapiens (“sensible humans”) emerged about 150,000 years ago.

Over time, we’ve accumulated people. Two-thousand years ago, our population was at 250 million. In the year 500 A.D., it remained the same. By 1000 A.D., we climbed to 500 million people. We reached 750 million people around 1500 A.D. We hit our first billion mark in 1800 at which time the Industrial Revolution kicked in. We added people more rapidly and began to move quickly in the direction of human overpopulation. Between 1800 and 1900 we added 600 million people. At 1900, we were at 1.6 billion. By 1960, in 60 short years, we nearly doubled that as we reached 3 billion.

In 1960, we humans had been here about 150,000 years. It took us that long to accumulate 3 billion people. How long did it take for us to double that number? Thirty-nine years! In 1999, we reached 6 billion people. It is estimated that we will be at 9.2 billion by 2050.
The effects of global overpopulation are multiple and ominous. As the result of having so many people who do not understand our reality and its behavioral demands, we have created an interrelated web of global environmental problems. We are depleting our natural resources: our forests, fisheries, range lands, croplands, and plant and animal species. We are destroying the biological diversity on which evolution thrives (this is being called the sixth great wave of extinction in the history of life on earth, different from the others in that it is caused not by external events, but by us).

With powerful new electrical and diesel pumping techniques, we are draining our aquifers and lowering our water tables. We are systemically polluting our air, water, and soil, and consequently our food chain. We are depleting the stratospheric ozone
1000
that shields us from harmful ultraviolet radiation. And, we are experiencing symptoms of global warming: heat waves, devastating droughts, dying forests, accelerated species extinction, dying coral reefs, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, more frequent and intense storms, and a more rapid spread of diseases.

With so many of us on a very small and fragile planet, and with the addition of so many more every week, we can no longer continue to relate to each other, our environment, ecological systems and biosphere as we have throughout our history. Nature, which could not care less, will eliminate us. To sustain humanity and advance our civilization, humankind must travel on a new and far more enlightened track. The solutions to global overpopulation and other pressing issues can be found at the website below.
